In May 2012, Pitt filed suit against the Big East Conference arguing, among other things, that the Big East waived its right to enforce a 27-month withdrawal notice requirement after allowing West Virginia to leave early for the Big 12 Conference.  The parties have chosen to resolve the dispute by allowing Pitt to join the Atlantic Coast Conference on July 1, 2013.  Additionally, Pitt will pay a graduated exit fee in the amount of $7.5 million (the amount called for in Big East Bylaws is $5 million).  This figure is the same amount as Syracuse agreed to pay to exit early.
